I won't Hush

A number of you demanded that I leave politics alone and stick to sports. You were upset because I called Barbara Bush insensitive for her remarks about people losing their homes and living in a smelly dome. She chuckled that since many of them were poor that they were probably better off.To those who say I should leave those subjects alone I say request denied. In other words I will write what I want. What you don't understand is I am a United States citizen and tax payer before I am a sports writer. I have views that affect my life and yours and I have the opportunity to express them just as you do.And I will. There is something called free speech in this country and I encourage all of you to exercise it. If you must have your views published you know how to go about it.We can disagree. But I will never ask that your voice be silenced -- no matter how silly it may sound.

It's your blog. But, just as you desire to voice opinions on national events, we have a desire to voice our opinions on what you write.

I do recall times when you had your column. You wrote about people or neighborhoods in Detroit. I always enjoyed those. They were well written and it was obvious you were close to the situation. I consider some of those articles your best. You took a topic, I initially had no desire to read about, but kept me interested till the end.

With national politics, your writings don't differ from any Joe Schmoe with a blog.

On matters of the city of Detroit and their sports teams, I highly respect your opinion or viewpoint.

YOu seem to be a bit hostile lately, T. The vast majority are behind you and only a couple people complained about your political columns. It seems that most of your blog entries have been of a lashing-out variety. Cheer up man!

Barbara Bush is an old, rich woman. She has no clue about poor white or black people. What she and other politicians say is irrelevant and to make some big deal about it is preposterous. Just like saying that Bush ignored the problem b/c the victims were primarily black. That's idiotic. But hey let's run with it b/c it fits the mindset that people have. Let's not look deeper at the situation. Write what you want. I'll disagree and agree with you as I see fit.

You have every right to post whatever the hell you want, this is your blog. People who don't want to read what you have to say have every right to not come here!! As far as Babs Bush goes, if she truly believes that these people, some who still don't know whether loved ones are dead or alive, including their own children, are better off now, she is as dumb as her son and you should email your comments to the old senile hag. Some people want to keep their heads buried in the sand and pretend that opinions like hers are not a problem, but it just goes to show the insensitivity of her and the rest of her pathetic family.

no need to hush, say what you want to say just have a level of intelligence behind it. which you always do. i agree that babs bush is out of touch and totally insensitive.

i will also say that the majority of the blame for the katrina aftermath disaster is the local gov't including LA governor, new orleans mayor. you know the sign of a great leader is one that makes decisions, stands behind them, and is accountable for them. the sign of a bad leader is one who points the finger and blames others for their mistakes. there is no question that FEMA dropped the ball but i want to see the LA governor and NO mayor resign as well. that is brutal.

speaking of hushing. i actually had a guy sitting in front of me tell me he wouldn't listen to my negative comments about UM during the ND game saturday. and this was after ND drove down and scored a TD on 6 plays/80 yds. guess he was impressed with that D. he is a loser and LIKES TO FIGHT GUY!!!

Wow Terry, Brent makes it sound like you can't speak on "America" because you are not "American". Brent, just because your opinion differs does not mean Terry is not right. Our country is in shambles and it is because of inept leadership. In sports a ton of people like to rally behind the home team in spite of their failures. Many of you are doing the same thing now with national politics. Bush, Rice, Chaney, Rumsfield have made a number of blunders and because they happen to have particular jobs right now you think that they should be exempt from criticism. That is sad and sounds like a dictatorship.

Anon,
He can speak on whatever he wants, I never said otherwise. But there are thousands of blogs that have "Americans" speaking about our country. yawn

This is the only blog I know of that is written by a Detroit sports writer that I respect.

It's the #1 reason I frequent this blog.

Now if Terry wants to write about national issues, that's fine. But one of the reasons I read this blog is to get away from the national issues.

Terry - The nature of this medium practically assumes you should express your point of view on ALL issues you care to. If anyone doesn't want to read, they don't have to. And there are no gatekeepers - unlike in print - who can silence you.

anonymous,

Our country is in shambles because rebublicans and democrates just want to make the other one look bad. Some of us spend so much freakin time arguing which side is right or pointing the finger rather than solving the problem. Unfortunatly this happens everywhere in companies, families, and our government. Sad state of affairs.
